Gravity mode is for where the hot water cylinder is heated by natural gravity circulation (warm water rises, cooler water sinks) and only the heating is pumped. In your case the heating and hot water are both pumped there is no gravity circulation.

The correct term for where you have a feed and expansion tank in the loft is 'open vented'.
During the summer I had some work done in the airing cupboard (shelves, etc.) and wiring was moved around.
Don't worry, we come across this all of the time, which was why I asked.
Has the system always had this fault? or did it suddenly appear? anything else happen / change at the same time?

The important thing is you got there in the end. Hope it will be OK now, and that you didn't invest in the Hive just to try and fix this problem.

Well done with the comprehensive posts and photos BTW. They contained the relevant information and were clearly presented.

Problem solved! Thanks again to both of you, I really appreciated the help.

Hive was an individual investment and not just a stab at fixing this, thankfully.

Thanks. I previously worked in a technical support team and I try to pay the logical approach forward.
