Price of ink

I like Canon printers, because a) the cartridges (even Canon branded ones) are cheaper than most others and b) the cartridges are see-through, so you can physically see whether they're empty or not. Our Canon ix4000 prints at least 50 pages AFTER the printer says the cartridge is empty and needs replacing. We buy either compatible cartridges or have them re-filled at a local shop. Despite all the warnings that non branded ink can damage the printer and can void the warranty, we've never had any problems with them.

I've found HP desktop printers are unbelievably expensive to run if you buy HP branded cartridges and they're difficult to get to print beyond when the 'chip' says they're empty.
