Pull switch removal

It looks like at the wall switch a wire has been borrowed from the switch in the next room.

Presumably to get the two way system in place, it was hard to get a 3 core+e down the wall, and so a wire (perm live I suppose) was borrowed from nextdoor.

There may or may not be a junction box somewhere, but it's irrelevent really.

Not too sure if the switches ARE wired correctly as pictures don't show this clearly to be sure.

However, if the op says the 2 way does function correctly, it will then be simple to describe how to join the pull switch wires in a junction box in the loft .

As for the wall switch, really needs tidying up. Obvious dangerous things - no grommets, unsheathed wires entering the metal box, no earth connection to what looks like a metal switch faceplate.

That (whether it is functioning as 2-way switching) is precisely what I've been try to get him to tell us - but, unless I've missed it, he has yet to give me an answer.

No both switches don't have to be on for the lights to work. they work as normal.

I don't think it matters WHO cut the cord. They can of course snap through wear.

No. That would mean they were wired in series, which is what I was trying to find out.

Not really. The OP has not been at all clear. I'm far from sure that he has even tried pulling the cord (if any is left to pull) and he has not responded to my question as to what happens if he does (can!) pull it.

I may be wrong, but I take his "working as normal" (and his subsequent 'clarifications') to mean that the light(s) goes on and off in response to operating the wall switch, without anyone ever touching (maybe not for years) the 'position' of the pull switch.

Dunno.

I suppose the reason we are doubting this is because from the pictures we have, it 'appears' the 'common' in each switch doesn't have the same colour wire - though a very few awful wall switch designs do in fact have the common terminal in an obscure place.

I'm not trying to tell you what you already know, but it may help the op to realise why all the questions...

Indeed - if, that is, it is good old-fashioned 2-way switching!

I wonder if the wall switch is a dimmer switch, and all the terminals are at the bottom, and some of the black wire disappears out of shot - that may explain why some of us aren't convinced...

Some of these companies use moulds for other fittings, so there is a hole with nothing in it that does not do anything.

No that's just what BG ones are like. I've looked at enough, replacing the ones from all those faulty batches!

I have no Idea what happened to the cord as it was missing when I moved in. The cord is not visible at all so I am unable now or in the past to use it.
When I say working normal I mean what you would expect a switch to do when you use it.
Click the switch down the light comes on.
Click the switch up the light goes out.
There are no problems between the rooms as far as turning the lights on and off via the wall switches.
