Random Tottenham riots!

The use of water cannon is illegal in this country, as it's deemed a form of torture. Must be a form of waterboarding torture, as used by the Americans.

If the police wanted to use water cannons they could do, it only takes one phone call to the Home Secretary and they can be in use, not technically illegal, just not approved to be used yet.

Problem is, I dont think they have them over here if they needed to use them. They should get a few on the next ferry from N Ireland!

So therefore their use is illegal..As stated. And need to be approved by the Home Secriatary?

Its a grey area....they are not illegal, as they have been used in Britain in the past, and quite recently.

Some forces have actually attempted to order them and trial them, some officers are trained to use them.

The problem is that they are not approved by the governmnt, that does not make them illegal. It just means the force Chief Constable has to ask can they use them.

So therefore they are illegal.

Funny that, they can be used with the approval of an assistant chief constable or a commander.....never knew they could make something illegal, legal!

Quote from The Home Secretary

“I think it is right that we look across the board at all the options that are available.

“Whether or not they choose to use water cannon is an operational issue"

They are legal, just not used. Not many are traied in the use and tactics. That may soon change as some forces have requested the option.

the Rights and wrongs of the killing of m duggan by the police and whether or not he was a criminal will hopefully be made clear soon

What I find so hypocritical is that when these idiots kill each other NONE of them say anything to the police , NO ONE GOES on a rampage or a protest to complain and they
Generally kill abt 30 of each other each year!

For all the people claiming the police are trigger happy - there have been 9 fatal incidents involving armed police, since 2004 in the whole of Britain.

Over 400 arrests some of whom will be in court today. It will be very interesting to see how the courts deal with these criminals.

Given that our prisons are already full, I guess they will get little more than a slap on the wrist.

Many will be going before 'virtual' courts...

Of course it's virtually certain that no police officer will find themselves held to account if it turns out they sparked these riots!

I blame namby pamby liberal d,heads who advocate "understanding" rather than punishment.
This isn't about some gangster getting shot, it's about the young underclass realising that at the moment the police are powerless against them. It's been coming for years, what with community groups , compo lawyers, European human rights legislation and politicians with no honour.
I'm sure the police would love to get the big stick out and get stuck right back into all these rioters, but they're sh1t scared to look sideways at them, especially if they're black.
In the meantime the rioters realise that as long as they have sufficient numbers they can do whatever they want to.
The politicians need to give the police the backing to deal with these scroats, and the courts need to make them wish they'd never joined in.
Water cannon, rubber bullets, tear gas, whatever it takes. And, don't lock them up, give them the birch until they beg and cry for mercy, then give them 5 more.

Can’t believe what I’m reading. Do you guys not see the point in what ellal is saying? In the first reports, there was a gun shoot out between the police and the guy who got shoot. It has now emerged the guy didn’t actually shoot at the police. What’s to say the next revelation is that, there was no other gun involved?

The official story change a few times in Charles De Menezes case before the truth came out. So waiting for the facts doesn’t make ellal a do-gooder or a lefty, but jumping on conclusions without the facts will make you a Tvv@t.

Do you not see the point? What has the police shooting someone got to do with full blown rioting and looting. I remember a few years ago, a white man was shot by police in Plumstead, south London, but it didn't result in the residents having a riot. They were pleased that a criminal had been deleted.

As for Charles de Menezes, a policeman aimed a gun at him which means 'stop' whatever language you speak. He chose to run so too bad.

Yes I do see your point. And I'm not saying that what's happening (riots) is right. I think the police are being too soft with the rioters. police should be aiming for their legs and arms. Each injured rioter = one less scum on the street the following day.

But I think you being a bit simplistic with the Charles de Menezes issue. Running or no running, an innocent person shouldn’t be shot dead.

He's not being 'simplistic', he's in denial...

It doesn't matter how many times someone repeats a lie, it doesn't make it true!

If i recall correctly, those involved in the Bradford Muslim riots went down for several years.
