not to disrupt the ill feeling being expressed but as the original poster could i just clarify that it is fine to use the immersion spur with new fuse, and also that the bonding, even though he only mentioned it after payment, is a matter of opinion as to whether or not i pay it or he does it? If that is so i assume its not a big/ expensive job?

cheers again and kudos on reply speed even if it is for ranting.

What a bad-tempered bunch!

Anyway, main bonding is not notifiable work and anyone can do it. Get yourself a length of 10mm green and yellow cable at your DIY shed or electrical supplier, a pipe bonding clamp, and some cable clips. It has to be installed in a single run, with no joins, from the rigid metal gas pipe on the consumers side of the meter and stop-cock, within 600mm of entering the house (if the meter is outside) and connected to the main earthing terminal. The water pipe also has to be done, but you do not mention if it is already OK.

At the consumer unit there may be an external earthing block you can use, or you may have to take the cover off. Some old ones have exposed live parts even when turned off at the main switch. Post a photo of the CU and the cables around the meter and supplier's fuse for more advice.

Go to //www.diynot.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=8 where you will find the electricians are more calm and courteous. Bonding is in

cross bonding needs to be done as for using the immersion spur fine as long as the fuse is changed

Yes, it's fine.

No, it's not big or expensive.

And before the first tee.

I've got no problem with connecting to the immersion switched fuse and fitting a 3 amp fuse on a combi, but technically I believe that if its a traditional system you are not supposed to spur off the immersion circuit whilst it is still in use, although most do.

The immersion circiut is supposed to be just for that, so I have beem told.
