Clearly the recession hasnt hit jo bloggs the builder.........yet

If you can get cheaper go for it as long as they do the job

I love the continued nonsense that somehow british builders all pay their taxes like good little citizens

space cat what are you smoking
as let be honest it better to pay for british labour
as we fallow the building regs which i can assure you some polish plumbers don`t

I had a new fencing and a repositioned gate done last year. Could have done it myself to be honest had loads on myself.

Rang a few places for some quotes, most of them all within a few hundred pound of each other. Mate of mine said try this other firm so I called them. Not sure of the blokes origin, not English., so i'm not saying he was Polish or Latvian or Alabanian etc etc!

He quoted me almost £500 less than the cheapest quote I already had.

His workmanship was top quality, good materials etc. He turned up earlier than he said by about an hour each time. Never vanished at 3pm!....when he looked like he had finished the job at dinner time ish, I just generally asked him what job you got on next.....he said i'm not done yet, I have to hose everywhere down and clean your side garden of dust etc!....I have never had that from a local guy.

Now i'm all for keeping local tradesmen in business, but do I go for a quote £500 more expensive for that reason....as cruel as it may sound, I think not!

most trades who turn up still want to be paid same as in the property boom.

This seems to be the crux of the issue, people are turning up and quoting, but you are unwilling to pay their rates.
Why should tradesman drop their prices cos of a recession? The price of utility bills, petrol, insurance, food goes up for them like it does anyone else.

Do you really think it is reasonable to charge £2900 for retiling our roof using concrete tiles (fast) which will take max 2 days? We supply all materials! That is 2 workmen two days max that works out about £90 hour each .They can ride of to sunset I am sure you will pay that!

We are doing a loft conversion and project manage it ourselfs but are finding it hard to get quotes for bricklaying, electrics ,and plumbing. There are lots of these trades around us but lot of them do not return tel.calls or bother to turn up having made appointment !!obviously too much work! most trades who turn up still want to be paid same as in the property boom .I do not see any recession here. Where are all these out of work trades? Not around here in south west hampshire!

This is the story everywhere. There must be too much work around.

I phoned and arrange an appointment for a quote for a concrete driveway. The guy cancelled the first appointment because he was feeling unwell that day, which is fair enough. But he just didn't show the following week.
We also had someone come give quote from check a trade recom. not only did not come but did not bother to text us or phone so much for chech a trade.
Neighbour was calling around for a waste pipe replacement, took her a while for someone to actually come and quote. Either there is too much work or some trades are charging too much to be too fussed about lost trade.

You seem to assume that our quotes are directly linked to property prices, the FTSE, or even unmployment figures. This is a little naive.

How about saying, in the last 4 years, my fuel prices have shot up by 40%, petrol by 45%, food by 15%, water 20%, rates 22% but my plumber, brickie, spark, hasn't increased his prices. They are similar to 4 years ago.

No, you imagine that there is so much 'fat' in trades' rates, that when times are harder, they have to slash prices for the privilidge of doing your work. Dream on. Our costs are rising all the time.

Also, after a few years in the game, we get a sixth sense about 'certain' customers. This may explain the lack of quotes you are receiving.
