you take the chance of breaking into a switch wire that way.. then we'll have to have the "my loft light only comes on at half brightness.." questions..
there's also the problem of "concealed JB's" if you board out the loft..
depending if the installer did it properly and clipped the cables, there may not be much slack to "break into" a cable anyway..

it is strange the electrician didn't reconnect the loft light.
possibly the loft light too needed rewiring, and it was easier not to bother.
is the existing loft light wiring old?
is it pvc, with an earth conductor running throughout?
if not it will need to be replaced.
was the loft light supposed to be part of the rewire? a rewire should be like for like; and some.
they didn't remove the old wiring then?

Hiya sparkwright, lazy isn`t the word i would use, anyway the cable has earth running through it and is pvc, i think they just thought i might never go in to my loft again.

is there a ceiling rose very near the end of the cable you want to reconnect?
and does the rose (or light fitting) have wiring inside like coljack's diagram?

No ceiling rose near enough.
then replace the cable for a longer bit.

For what it's worth (1milli or 1,5 is peanuts), replace the cable to the loft light with a nice new bit from the lighting point with 2 cables in (as per Col's post) Run to the new light fitting via a surface-mounted switch, either rocker or pull-cord. If you want a bit more light, fit a flu.
I use anti-corrosives in places like that. The cover is flexible & will take a hefty knock and if you are unlucky enough to break a tube, it's all contained in the sealed fitting.
