Funnily enough the British said something similar in the nineteenth century....The Russians commentated that Afghanistan will never be sorted out long term when our lot went in. They may be correct on that.

Plans are also afoot to reduce the quantity of traditional hardware e.g. tanks.
The rationale is modern warfare is increasingly not fought with boots on the ground or in tanks, hence a move to drones and concentration on cyber capabilities.
Are we more exposed now we're out of the EU and is the assertion justified that, with a reduction in trained personnel, we could find ourselves spread too thin in the future, putting the nation at risk.

There has been only one conflict in the last hundred years, that I'm aware of, that the UK was required "to defend" itself.The army isnt really required to "defend" the uk any more, it's now more about getting troops on the ground once the bombs have done their bit in places like libya etc,
