You can't nuke an ideology
Better to take out leaders and small bands of "fighters"
Bombing Afghanistan "back to the Stone Age" didn't work because they were already half way there
All you do is antagonise people who were neutral into fighting against you

The Russians commentated that Afghanistan will never be sorted out long term when our lot went in. They may be correct on that. While they were there dear Dustbin was a western hero supplied with arms. ;) Commentators said that this would be regretted eventually as he just hates the west - all of it.

Saddam has been portrayed the same way as well - hero defending us from Iran.

You've gone from General Armchair to a Petty Officer of the Poop Deck in one afternoon. Would you like a medal or a chest to pin it on?

All ships are targets.

But if the people making them actually do their jobs properly, the people using them then just have to concentrate on their jobs and adversaries not wondering about the guarantee claims.
Care to tell us what assets are there to defend them?

Unless of course taking almost the entire navy with them is an option...

Although to be fair probably only one will be at sea at a time, so they can share those overpriced US jets...

Funnily enough the British said something similar in the nineteenth century....

The thing we learn from history is we never learn from history!

funnily enough, I have read that twice and it is just as pointless a statement as the first time. Neither profound, accurate or convincing.

What do you think about this (if anything)?

Plans are also afoot to reduce the quantity of traditional hardware e.g. tanks.

The rationale is modern warfare is increasingly not fought with boots on the ground or in tanks, hence a move to drones and concentration on cyber capabilities.

Are we more exposed now we're out of the EU and is the assertion justified that, with a reduction in trained personnel, we could find ourselves spread too thin in the future, putting the nation at risk.

Defence review: British army to be cut to 72,500 troops by 2025 - BBC News

it's highly unlikely this day in age there will be any more major wars of the likes of WW2.

With technology the way it is now, we can almost send bombs around the globe from a single location.

The army isnt really required to "defend" the uk any more, it's now more about getting troops on the ground once the bombs have done their bit in places like libya etc,

i cant see us doing another Iraq or Afghanistan again with how unpopular they were.

The UK army will also most likely never enter another country on its own, they will always be with an allies, so there is no need to have such vast units any longer,

i know this news as got the likes of certain members on here foaming at the mouth calling it cut back etc, and yeah maybe it is, but look at the bigger picture and think about it.

personally i think we should make better use of the armed forces in the UK, maybe we could use them for protests and riots and take some pressure of the UK police force.

There has been only one conflict in the last hundred years, that I'm aware of, that the UK was required "to defend" itself.
All the other conflicts have been in other countries, to their detriment, leaving them barren earth, depleted populations and resources, destroyed physical and administrative infrastructure, decimated industry and commerce, etc.
Of course, all this was done in the name of peace.

Boris Johnson promised not to reduce the size of the British armed forces.

Why is everybody so surprised this manifesto promise was a lie? Same as just about every other!
Everything that borisconi utters is a lie...

But those who voted for him (and his tory chums) don't want to hear that...

Because they would then have to face up to the fact that they are totally stupid!

MILITARY ACTION Boris Johnson backs Britain’s ‘fantastic’ troops and promises NOT to cut Armed Forces budget - 24 Nov 2019

Other promises broken - real pay rises for nurses, tax cuts for workers. All lies!

i dont mean to defend the indefensible, but there's quite a big thing going on at the moment called COVID-19 pandemic you may not have heard of it, Ellal and john the plumber deny its a thing, where the government has had to pump hundreds of millions into making sure we all have a roof over our heads, business survives, jobs retained, vaccines procurred etc.

All this needs to be paid back, so its only befitting that policies require a change from initial statement.

had corbyn got into power do you really believe we would all have free internet now, and all utilities would have been compulsory purchased and brought back under Government control? or any of the other hair brained schemes he dreamt up.

there politicians, we all know their word means the grand sum of diddly squat.
