Hi the ancient staircase to our loft room is knackered, half of the treads and risers are split and need replacing - I'm weighing up wether to repair or replace the whole thing.

It currently turns left, which is tight to the chimney breast, if I am going to replace it I'd rather it turned right as there's more space for access - but regarding building regulations would this still count as fair game for 'better than what's already there but not meeting current regs replacement'?

Or am I better off just repairing it as best I can?

Repair.
If it's to a loft then presumably it doesn't get much foot traffic anyway? I assume that you have access to the back of them to add packers and wedges etc?

With regards to the regs provided it's no worse (steeper) than before then you're fine even if you handed it. Those winders look like they'd be non compliant now. That said if it didn't meet current regs it may be difficult to source a cheap like for like staircase off the peg as generally all the cheap stairs are aimed at meeting the regs or better. I too would favour repairing it, looks like to actually replace that stair you'd be chopping most of your wall finishes out too to shoe horn a new one in. And could you actually get a new stair up your (presumably) existing ground - first floor stairs? Otherwise you'd need to get one delivered pre-assembled and then build it yourself.
