Return to work after furlough

I was discussing this, virtually of course, with a colleague the other day. I wouldn't be at all surprised that if the work the teams do is being done at an acceptable rate, then the powers that be might decide there's no point in having an expensive city centre office and we switch to an entirely virtual working model. Might happen, as from a purely technical perspective, none of us really need to be physically in an office.

How many of us knew what a furlough was until a couple of weeks ago?

I was discussing this, virtually of course, with a colleague the other day. I wouldn't be at all surprised that if the work the teams do is being done at an acceptable rate, then the powers that be might decide there's no point in having an expensive city centre office and we switch to an entirely virtual working model. Might happen, as from a purely technical perspective, none of us really need to be physically in an office.

Things like the CV crisis are sometimes needed to create the "paradigm shift", and completely change tracks.

Our company was always behind the curve, technology-wise, to the point where I was forbade to move my dept over to electronic operation (permitting remote working, across all of our sites and offices). This was in the mid-2000s.

Somehow, I "missed" the "don't" part of the instruction, and set up a parallel electronic system. Once I was happy that it was doing everything I needed it to do, I retired the old, hard-copy system.
Apart from some hardware investment that the company still wouldn't fund, it's pretty much as I envisaged it, all of those years ago.

In truth, we need probably about a fifth of the office space we maintain, but old habits die hard with the top brass.
All of that money needlessly spent; it would grieve me, if it were directly mine.

Back is in bits causing withering sciatica, lower leg is dodgy due to crushed lower back nerves (L4 vertebra), arthritis in both shoulders (more in the right shoulder), right elbow severely trapped nerve causing numb and poor motor function to fingers (especially little finger and his neighbour), unable to straighten left elbow due to knackered cartilage.


I'd love a furlough.

Depending on how long the "lockdown" lasts, how will people who have been furloughed feel about returning to work ? I can imagine some can't wait to get back, while others may struggle , just like returning after a long holiday, and may not want to go back. Anyone on here who has been furloughed with an opinion ?

The psychological aspect of this will last for ages.

My partner will have to go into isolation when returning from abroad, and will go straight back to work afterwards without question.

I've employed people who have put on a face mask quicker than you can say boo!

As for myself, I've always followed the policy of caution but not paranoia throughout my life.

But we are all human, and thus we will react differently.

Discussed it today at work with the boss, Im finishing this project Im on Monday then Im furloughed.
Which means IM doing the landing lights, the walls, some plastering (unless I can't get any) and sorting stuff out.
Also walking the dogs is all for me.
I'll go crazy within a week lol

Wow, how do you even get out of bed?
And I complain of some leg discomfort following spinal surgery many moons ago (L4-L5 like yours)

I worked from home running my own business for 6 years, but have been working for others for the last 5 years now. I still found the first week working from home hard!
Not furloughed, but still, now enjoying working from home. My lounge is much nicer than my office at work. No commute - I've only driven my car a couple of times in the last fortnight to go to a local food shop. I can get used to this.

Will be nice to go back, and will soon get back into the routine. I have turned my alarm off now, well, it goes off at 8.20, just in case - I start work at 8.30. Not needed it yet though.

Is a sabbatical a posh version of a furlough?

There are always people worse off. I'm a pragmatist at heart, but it does get more difficult as the years go on. Haven't really stopped getting stuck in since I was 15.

I watched Bilko as a kid, most of it long forgotten but one of Bilkos lines has always stuck in my memory:

"All I ask is a fair weeks wage for a fair days work"
