Rover 45 TD engine jerky when cold

Check the bulb as well, these are not unknown to perish and leak, and/or the non return valve to stick open. How old is the car? If its a mk 1, try unplugging the MAF and see if that makes any difference. (Doing this on a mk 2 brings the engine management light on.)

2001 reg

The bulb seemed to be working well when I changed the filter a few months back.

I'll have a look at the tanks sender and see if some silicon sealant will right matters.

Is the rear seat clipped in or bolted in, anyone know ?

I don't want to rive on and tear upholstery.

I think it may be bolted in, on the hatchback the seat base will pull up and tip forward, leaving you some carpet to pull up. Not sure on the saloon version. I would also try unplugging the MAF, (you've a mk 1, the facelift versions were around 2003 onwards), and see if that makes any difference. Original MAF was a Bosch part, and renowned for failing, often after a relatively short period of time. Mine's been ditched for the Pierburgh version, with a MAFAM unit to amplify the signal, don't go too badly either on that setup!

There's a smell of diesel around the tank after I've been driving so the tank's coming off so I can get to the leak.

Since there's air ingress in the system, I suspect the tank pipe connection. Hopefully with a clean up, some silicon sealant will bung the leak - depending on what it is of course.

When sorted, I've got some underseal to paint the entire tank -

I doubt silicone sealant will seal a diesel leak. With your clutch problem , isn't it time the car was scrapped?

I've been in touch with a Rover specialist who reckons the repairs are quite easy to do.

The clutch problem is the master so I've got a master/pipe/slave set off ebay to sort that out.

All the repairs done for less than £50 can't be bad surely !

Cant complain, its cheap motoring. Mine's just gone through its MOT with just an advisory for a front tyre. Not bad for 15 years and 183000 miles.

I've taken the diesel tank off and its corroded at the rim. There's pin hole diesel squirts in the offside when I tip the tank up.

I think I can repair with a combination of silicon seal and fibreglass paste then paint the entire tank, when degreased, with underseal.

That's the source of the leak I could smell but doesn't explain the ingress of air in the fuel line !

I'm scrapping the car sadly.

Tried some silicon seal on the fuel rim but the rust has split the lower and upper flanges apart so sealing is not practical and may start to leak again.

None of the local breakers have a diesel 45 in so no pas pump to be had either if I were to take that off and investigate its leak.

Well now, I persevered with the repair and rubbed silicon seal in the wire brushed rusted areas then painted the entire tank in waxoil underseal then left it to dry hanging with the leaking side of the tank at the bottom. With the silicon and underseal, no leaks overnight.

I put the tank back on this morning and did a 25 mile journey no leaks and no smell of diesel.

Also no misfires so that's a plus.

Might pull the pas pump and see if a drop of silicon seal will fettle that !

I was going to see an Octavia TDI in a local garage but its out on courtesy loan. Supposed to be back tomorrow but the borrower has gone on holiday and left the garage a bit annoyed.

Hopefully the leak may have been sorted then. I think you said before the PAS pump was leaking? Check the banjo union on the inlet from the reservoir, these have a copper washer either side of the banjo to make the seal, if it's the pump itself, they are a sealed unit so cannot be fixed, as the gasket isn't listed as a part. New pump about £120 + exchange surcharge on the old unit.

If you use Facebook, look for the Rover owners groups. Often someone breaking a car, or has the parts in question lying about from another vehicle.
