Screwfix

I am pretty sure they have changed their website to use something that older browsers do not support.

A very old browser stopped being able to access their website last week. So I tried a different one and can access it. When using that second browser I see the following warning banner

Good spot. However the OP should have been presented with that banner even if their browser is ancient.

And in the case of @JobAndKnock I very much doubt that his Samsung is running Android 4.4 given that it was first released in 2013.

As I said, my very old browser could not access their website. Hence it did not display that banner.

Sorry I misunderstood your post.

So you see that warning on your current browser? I don't.

I don't quite understand the point of a warning on compliant browsers being visible that are not visible on non-compliant browsers.

BTW....

Type the following in to the address bar of the browser and see it you can access the site

81.148.198.11

The above should resolve to https://www.screwfix.com
Thanks, all devices to my router but also to my Daughters who is with Bt so thought it may be something to do with plusnet/Bt because I can access SF on 4g.
I typed in your suggestion and got:

Now that I know which IPS you have, I googled "plusnet screwfix". It does indeed look like it may be a DNS issue but not a straight forward one...

I can walk you though the process of using different DNS settings if you want.

Thanks opps for your kind offer but for now I will use the app on my mobiles and forget the laptop until I have more time although I do find it better with a larger screen.
I changed from Bt to plusnet in May and have to say the later has been a great disappointment.
With Bt I could access 4g nearly everywhere in the house but with plusnet I don't have enough signal to send a text unless hanging out of an upstairs window.

I don't quite understand the point of a warning on compliant browsers being visible that are not visible on non-compliant browsers.
My educated guess is that there is a three-way split:
- Sufficiently modern browsers just see the relevant page.
- Old browsers (non-compliant ones) see the relevant page with the warning banner.
- Even older browsers cannot load the page.

The browser that I used that sees the relevant page with the warning banner, is a Firefox derivative and I suspect that there is not a specific test for this and this has confused the script that checks the version number.

I can access the site, for some bizarre reason, I can not PING it
It's quite typical for servers to be configured to ignore pings but serve websites.

It's such a prevalent practice that I wouldn't bother using ping as a diagnostic for anything other than perhaps basic connectivity using a server known to respond to pings (like 8.8.8.8)

Perhaps then the simplest solution will be to turn your phone's personal Wi-Fi hotspot on and then connect your computer to that hotspot- the computer will get its internet connection via the phone, including (probably) a different set of DNS servers.

Feel free to take up opps' offer of choosing a different DNS; it's quick to do and won't adversely affect your internet experience, you won't have to revert the change

Its not really an option to use the phone as as suggested because theres no coverage in the house.
I will takes up opps offer but my head is full of other stuff at the mo.

PlusNet had a ticket opened for this on Wednesday, so anyone on PlusNet who is having this problem should ring them (on 0800 432 0200) as they are trying to collate details. Off to reboot my router, yet again...

Thanks. I had never encountered that before but yeah, it seems that many servers ignore ICMP requests.
