I have seen the adverts about solar panels saying you can sell electric back to the national grid but I was wondering how it is done and monitered...with your current electric supply it is monitored how much you use through your meter...........to sell it back is it just a plug in device and how do they know how much you have returned??

Your current electric meter is an import meter, when you have a generation system fitted you have an import/export meter, thus recording what you use and what you put into the grid.

It's a bit more complicated than that.

The Feed In Tariff pays per kWh of energy generated; that is measured using a meter at the generator output.

You pay for energy imported using a meter at the point of supply.

If you generate more electricity than you consume, you can sell it to your supplier — this is in addition to the payment you get under the FIT
