There is now only seven days (24th) left of using the old colour cable - and guess what,? four days ago I went to a little village hardware shop to look around and the cable drums there had different size cables on, the 1.0mm and 6.0mm sizes still in the old colours!

Did they have enough to make it worth making an offer, for subsequent re-sale on eBay to those who wish to disguise when they did notifiable work?

Anyway - I maintain that you can still use the old colours after April 1st.

I understand your reasons for using old cable to disguise the work, but harmosnised colours were also available BEFORE Jan 2005 (when work became notifiable) , so surely it would be technically possile to disguise notifiable work with harmonised cable, because the new harmonised colours were around before the new building regs!! Which makes me wonder why people pay over the odds on ebay for the old colours.

On the subject of old cable colours, B&Q were knocking loads drums out at 50% cost, about 6months ago. Maybe they've still got some stashed - if people want the old cable , there will be money to be made , however, there will probably be some criminal offence to pass it on after April 1st - be interesting this one.

I can't see why, I can't wire my lights with fencing/razor wire and still comply with BS7671, but I don't see any law preventing the sale of fencing/razor wire...

mmm dual pupose wire, supply for garden lighting and intrusion protection measure ;)

I'm sure you've done this before, Ban, but can you expand on this?

well 7671 has no legal force and all part P requires is that reasonable provision be made to ensure the installation is safe. So when extending an existing install just put "red/black used for consistancy with existing wiring" in the deviations box and i can't see how any reasonable argument can be made that the deviation is unsafe.

The self cert schemes require their members to work to BS7671 IIRC ,and if you're notifying directly to LABC yourself, they like to kick up a fuss if they haven't got plain old BS7671 cos they like everything nice and simple, maybe someone will give a LABC a kick and things will change *glances at ban*

As said above - it's only BS 7671 which implements the change, and there is no law which says you have to adhere to BS 7671.

Also, there is a law which says that "Reasonable provision shall be made in the design and installation of electrical installations in order to protect persons operating, maintaining or altering the installations from fire or injury".

I can see why mixing of colours has to be allowed, but I maintain that not doing so if you don't have to is safer than mixing them, particularly with 3-core cable. Since even working to BS 7671 allows exceptions to be recorded, I see no reason not to carry on extending and repairing existing installations with old colours for as long as you can get them, and valid reasons why that approach should be preferred.

That`s what I thought you`d say.
Somesay that , if you work to regs then you may not deviate on an installation therefore new colours will be a must do,
They might have a point I suppose.
Realistically I hate the new colours and begrudge the fact that Europe didn`t change to ours.
Mind you it`ll only kill about 5 folk per year , and cosidering Part P will save 5 to 10 a year we`re still in profit so that makes "sense"

if you must not deviate from BS7671 they why do the installation certs have a box to document diviations?
