There is a huge difference between washing sand off your feet or chlorine off your bikini than having a full on (nude) shower.

I have used many communal showers in the UK, all of them associated with swimming pools. Covering the naughty bits (usually with swimwear) is expected, especially where minors are present.

If there are lockable shower cubicles, naked showers can be had.

But even where same sex facilities exist, it can be impossible to cover up completely in front of minors.
