My FIL is a bit of 'sky at night' kinda guy and has been monitoring the passing of the international space station.
There is a website dedicated to informing the public of the times that it will be visible in the night sky. The info' describes from where the object will appear (i.e. NSEW) at exactly what time and how long the passage across the sky will be.
I have observed it a few times and it appears similar to a passing aircraft with its fuselage lights on only this fella don't flash.
It moves across the sky quite swiftly, so considering that it is quite far away only adds to the fact that it is absolutely hurtling through space.
