I think the chinese lanterns are brilliant. We had a shed load flying over on new years. Looked far better than all those stupid annoying noisy fireworks.
what could cause such a thing.... i'd half expect a news story tomorrow am saying that the ISS had burned up in space.... what else could couse such a phenomena?
There was a report that the nearest 'red dwarf', or suchwith, was due to explode, within the next 500 years give or take, but would light the night sky, as bright as the sun.....but you saw a flash? Have you taken beer?

You dismiss this comment, you wanted proper comment, but abused my reply. Hence why you get the replies you receive. So don't abuse serious comment, if this was the case, then it would have been reported in the media, but no need to dismiss it. So disrespectfully.

What? you told me i might have seen something that could have lit up the whole sky in the next 500 years? when it was a bright light yesterday !!! What's your problem moody?

Don't mind Micky, he's got problems.
You most likely saw an iridium flare.
The nearest red dwarf planet/sun is due to explode in the next 500 years, I said, maybe you saw that? But nobody else did. Yellowstone Park in America, a supervolcano, is due to explode in the next 500-1000 years..that will wipe all life on Earth out. Scientists know this, but you go on about a 'flash' in the sky?
Monkeh..you are correct,.

Firstly, scientists say when it does explode, it will light up the sky. It'll be like having daylight 24/7. Not just a flash.
Secondly, scientists don't know that it will make humans extinct. Infact, I haven't read anything that even suggests we'll become extinct?
Link(s), please.
i didn't say flash, i said a bright light that went out quite quickly....
and to be honest, it's hardly gonna be a red dwarf or a volcano is it really?
realistically, it was a plane, or the ISS, quickly covered by cloud - a few people said such, and in hindsight they were probably correct !

An iridium flare. They're often quite brief, mere seconds. The ISS would not be that bright, nor would a plane.

What is an iridium flare used for and by whom?
Agreed, the ISS wasn't that bright, but last night i saw a plane light.... very bright, and it went out leaving a much dimmer flashing light....

An iridium flare is a reflection of sunlight from one of the Iridium communications satellites.
