speculation about cut gas pipes

that's interesting... so hypothetically say you cut into the mains gas pipe in your house and gas starts escaping - then you immediately ignite it with a match.
Is all that's gonna happen is that it will be like a giant blow torch? (a bit like a flame thrower)
All thats going to happen?

Isnt that "enough"?

Dont worry if not - Im sure there would be lots more happenings happening up not long after youd fired up a giant blowtorch in your house

On Tuesday at about 15:00 BST, the leak in Cleat Hill, Bedford, was discovered after a contractor struck a pocket of natural gas while drilling a borehole for a heat pump.
I wonder how they discovered the leak?
It would have been trickier without the mercaptan - presumably bore holers would have gas detection equipment, but I bet they weren't expecting that.

that was back in july
but there was an explosion on saturday in Cleat hill killing someone that is still being investigated so could be the result of the gas pockets as oppossed to piped gas

Estate not built on old landfill is it?

I think highly unlikely. Ordnance Survey maps from circa 1900 aren't showing anything, it's also quite close to a watercourse. Nearest neighbours from that era were a couple of Brickworks, which now are gardens of newer properties on one side and a Golf Course opposite. The road was closed for several days back in July when the original issue was discovered, https://www.bedfordtoday.co.uk/news...hill-as-fire-crews-deal-with-gas-leak-4688282

All went quiet, until Saturday morning when Neighbours reported a large explosion at approximately 07.30, followed by quite a serious fire. https://www.bedfordindependent.co.uk/roads-closed-and-homes-evacuated-as-firefighters-tackle-blaze/

I usually go past the location on a Sunday to collect my Daughter from her Mothers, got to the Golf Course yesterday before coming across a Police roadblock, which then necessitated going back on myself for several miles to pick up a diversion. Council have put more effective closures in today I understand.

Ironically a Building Contractor has hit a medium pressure gas main earlier today at the site of a new school, a mile or so from this location.

For those interested, I've had several more articles from the local Media appear on my feed, a bit more is now known about what is possibly going on.

My understanding is, a borehole was being drilled for a Ground Source Heat pump back in July when a pocket of gas was breached, causing the gas to escape to the surface. It then appears a vent stack was installed to vent the escaping gas to atmosphere, https://videopress.com/v/LwjYs7Tb

There is little mention of what may have been happening in the meantime, other than the situation was being 'monitored', until the fatal explosion, although the Neighbours have been reporting it getting 'cloudy' in the street. Assuming it was methane escaping, there would be no apparent odour, so any build up would be largely undetectable without suitable test gear I am thinking.

The Man who lost his Life in the explosion has been named, his Sister in Law remain in Hospital with serious injuries. A 100m cordon around the Borehole remains in place, with affected Residents being escorted into the restricted area to collect essential belongings.
