Any one heard that the speed cameras on the M1 and M25 are going to be set a max of 72 mph tomorrow

Had an email about the caper ?? Or is it a wind up ???

hopefully they will be setting them to 70. 72 would be breaking the law.

There's always been a 10%+2mph allowance.
So 79mph on motorways.
That's because some smartass solicitors could challenge the accuracy of the device, or it's already been done (?)

It’s one thing having limits, and another actually enforcing them. Static cameras don’t work as most people know where they are

Because the car manufacturers only have to make their speedos to a certain tolerance.

All cars will tell you that you are travelling faster than you really are, this is on purpose.

Easy to check with a decent Sat Nav.

isn't it amazing in this day of space ship tech cars that they still can't work out how fast they are going with any meaningful accuracy..

They absolutely can work out how to do it (it's done: police car speedos may be calibrated to be highly accurate enough suitable for forming the necessary second opinion that a person is speeding), they just don't. There are a lot of variables, some out of control of the manufacturer, that contribute to getting an inaccurate reading.

Better to just set things up so that the Speedo reads somewhere between 0% and 10% faster than you're actually going, then you stay on the right side of the law.

This has been a thing since long before GPS was a thing

What's the point though?

Speed is not dangerous because you've exceeded an often arbitrary number, any more than it is safe because you haven't.

Surely it's a case of cost V benefit.
I'm sure it's easily possible to equip vehicles with more accurate speedos, but as brigadier says (albeit in a different argument), what's the point - of increasing the manufacturing costs?

Its fake news.
Type approval for most of the devices is 10%, the manufacturers are not obliged to show any better accuracy, so they don't. If you want to prove speeding below 10% then you'd need additional evidence, that will take some bloke in an office measuring the distance travelled over a stated time from the two photos and being 100% sure the timing is accurate.

Magistrates who are very busy, wont be very impressed with dealing with cases of 72mph on a motorway.

I've said on here before, it wouldn't necessarily bother me if they mandated speed limits, even if they were on the 'eh?!?' side for example much more 20 zones, limited to 60 on the motorway etc.

Here's the caveat however ...

I'd only be okay with it if it genuinely applied to everyone e.g. implemented electronically. What frustrates the feck out of me sometimes is when you do drive at or slightly below whatever limit, there are many who don't. So you end up with a tailgating situation or drivers getting frustrated with you. Heck this even happens if you drive a bit above the limit. And before folk start with the usual stuff about it's safe to do this depending in the circumstances/road conditions etc, all this sort of stuff also happens when it's busy, in built up areas etc.

If we all had no choice due to our vehicles being limited, they can do what the heck they like as far as I'm concerned. Too many idiots on the roads these days.
