Hi all. Found this on my elderly mother’s stairlift. I contacted the stairlift company and they said it’s perfectly fine to join mains voltage cables together by twisting the wires together and putting a bit of tape around them. Apparently the do it all the time. Thoughts?

Personally i would use an inline connector , dont like tape, and easy to disconnect by accident and then have LIVE cable bare - DANGER
OR as its so short , from the moulded Plug - i would put a new plug on it, so NO join

do you know why its been CUT like that ?

Thanks. Can’t understand why they didn’t just use a new plug, Surely taping is dangerous and not an approved jointing method for mains cable.

Tell them to come and do it properly. Say youi will report them to trading standards! That is so dangerous, especially considering the age of the user!!

They are usually connected to an FCU so that the plug cannot be removed accidently rendering the stair lift inoperable after the battery has gone flat. That could lead to some one being stuck half way up or down. Changing the socket to an FCU would be the best option.

Thanks. I have replaced it with a new cable myself. It’s supplying a transformer and I had a spare cable that fit. Just spoke to the company owner and he says his mates an electrician and says it’s fine . Ha ha

It is absolutely not safe at all, even as a temporary, emergency botch. His mate is very unlikely to be qualified, get in touch with TS, and report them.

The easy, safe fix, is to simply buy and fit a new plug.

They said they buy them to recondition them and often the plugs are cut off. I asked why a new plug wasn’t fit and they said the installer probably didn’t have one on him. ‍♂️

Think about that for a moment.

What's that smell? Ah BS.

So - they recondition them but do not think about a plug until they have installed it at the customer's house.

Might be a good idea to verify with the manufacturer that the stair lift is safe to operate without an effective Earth

Also inform the manufacturer about this installation of a reconditioned stair lift

It’s battery operated. The cable is supplying the low voltage transformer. Gonna report to trading standards as I’m concerned there is loads more like this out there.
