Sounds like a blunt chain. You've probably hit stone/metal/soil. When at college as a teenager we were taught how to sharpen a chain long before how to use the saw.

Not my pic, sharp chain vs badly damaged chain. It should be razor sharp, sharp enough to cut your finger - without the saw being on! Also depth gauges set to right height once sharpened
