I had a boiler fitted but noticed this string attached around one of the pipes. I pulled a bit off.
What is it for and do l need to call out the engineer again?

It is a way of sealing certain joints. It helps seal the thread. Was your installer quite old? Nothing wrong with it.

I think your picture shows the drain cock on the labrynth filter of a Spirotech.

Stand back and take a wider pic to confirm it.

Anything to do with water, gas and electrics does my head in. The last thing l want is the potential for anything to blow up

Your message seems to be cut short.
Is this a problem that needs to be rectified as l took some of this string away last night after l saw it after having a few beers

Aside from the PTFE tape, they do a PTFE string. The 'string', looks like it could be the latter. Any which pokes out of the joint, is not a problem, it just looks untidy. The water tight seal is made, by the string inside which you cannot see. Any which you can see, you can tear away, without causing a problem..

Phew, thanks Harry. Can l just confirm that if a leak occurs, there's no danger of a gas explosion? Sorry to sound dramatic

Isn't that hemp rather than Loctite 55?

Dunno, I am not a plumber but I do use Loctite 55.
