Structural ridge: 9" x 2" enough for 13' (4m) span

The ridges in my house are made from T&G floorboard. Guess building regs have changed a bit.

In your house the roof is prevented from sagging and spreading the walls by the floor joists acting as rafter ties. I'm going for a self supporting, or structural ridge, which has little deflection and therefore transmits the load born by the stud walls downwards.

This is going to allow me to keep the ridge height to below 2.5 m while keeping a good room volume. I'm less than 2m from the boundary, so believe this is the requirement in the UK.

Spreadsheets are useful but for small jobs like a ridge beam or purlin it's often quicker doing it by hand.
