Well that depends on the Ze result when tested.......sometimes distance is better than depth ;)

Just when you think your getting somewhere, so i really need to find someone to put in the earthing rod. or just put it into the ground till it hits australlia?

It depends on what the soil type is.
If it's not stoney / gravel / rock based you should be ok with one rod, but you wont know for definate unless its testedcorrectly.
But seen as the mainswitch is an rcd you (in theory) could have a max Ze of 1666 ohms but better to get it below 200 even better at 100 or less.

As said it's sometimes a better result if the rods are placed a distance apart rather than joined length wise.

Seen as nobody has mentioned it (i think)...you do know this work is notifiable under part P ?

Depends on how damp/wet subsoil is.

There are extension kits so you can join another rod on and go deeper.

Sometimes it's easier to put a couple of rods down and link them it all depends on terrain

yep i do know about part P. Am also looking to actually become a qualified electrician but already running an IT company its finding time to actually qualify. Thanks for all your help.

One registered part P electrician i got to quote has quoted on 6mm2 armour and mentions nothing about actually earthing it. i assume he was going to just earth it to the houses supply. and a second quote mentions 10mm2 and like wise no earthing rod's so this is what makes me think i'd be better off doing it myself and just getting it checked as it seams thier just out for money and not intrested in the best for future proofing

Sorry about my lil moan!

A lot depends on what you asked for in your spec and of course we don't know what your earthing arrangements are whereas the the visiting sparks should have inspected that on their visits.

For instance I have had a quote questioned recently for a similar job as yours (my quote was higher than another contractor) but when I explained my design criterion in terms of extending eaxpanding etc, to customer I got the job,
