Taking back control?

Tax should be levied on imports so as to make home-produced goods more attractive

That is exactly the purpose of trade tariffs - to protect domestic producers.

And the reason why UK kept pretty much same tariff rates as EU.

One example: UK has lowered sugar tariff, with the result British beet farmers are worried about losing out to cheaper imports (I might mention David Davis worked for Tate and Lyle, who will benefit from this)

Lots of substandard steel products from china just to save a few pennies.

there's nothing new or special about steelmaking.

If we wanted to buy better quality, and pay a higher price, I don't see any reason why China would refuse.

Equally, they don't turn down buyers who want cheap, poor quality material.

We have problems with steel as suitable ore locally is a bit of a problem. Japan had that problem as well so really and truly got into recovery and reprocessing it including cars from other countries. That was a good while ago when they wanted their industry to grow. Steel has pollution problems as well. If as I have you had been within a mile or so of a UK steel plant your nose alone would give you a good indication of that. I visited Corby once and it made me literally cough.

Beef and Oz - simple. Much bigger place and beef herds aren't just a bit bigger than ours. They are huge. NZ lamb is still around but usually as tough as old boots compared with local stuff - that can be too at times.

A politician was questioned about this area recently concerning the obvious and animal welfare. The answer was tariffs but if they cause the price to exceed UK produced who is going to buy or sell here for that matter. Probably the usual. The more affluent will eat higher priced food. Same with buying goods. We import far more chicken than we export. Just an example.

In Slough we had the Mars confectionery factories and on the other side of the M4 a large sewage treatment works. Depending on which way the wind was blowing the prevailing smell alternated between sh1t and chocolate.
They made improvements to the sewage works quite a few years ago which more or less cured the problem.

The traditional problem with Chinese steel was when they overproduced they would flood the markets with cheap steel which crippled the European manufacturers.

flood the markets with cheap steel

I was responding to the charge that European buyers (including British) were choosing to buy poor-quality steel (because it is cheap)

We won't mention the UK blocking EU proposals to control steel imports from China.

There's always plenty of applications for poor quality steel.

I hadn't known about 'low background' steel till recent years, steel produced before the 40's, more specifically, steel produced before nuclear bombs were detonated. Essential for surgical instruments and other specialist applications. Old shipwrecks are becoming a reliable source.

Are you saying scrap all international bi-lateral trade agreements? Imposing tarrifs is highly contentious for both parties.
It surely must be possible for countries to trade in stuff they want.
I'll swap my X for some of your Y kind of thing ...

Unfortunately, that's not true.

Many Chinese steel mills don't have the equipment, skill level or knowledge to produce comparable quality steel to the European mills.

If you buy Chinese steel you need to know the mill of origin if you want to buy material with a consistent surface finish and stable mechanical properties.

Even then, it's a gamble because the standards laid down for standard grades of steel are quite broad. European mills produce steel with very tight tolerances within the standards, whereas chinese steel uses the full range of tolerance within the standards.

On the odd occasion that we end up with steel of chinese origin (usually supplied in error) it will have a much thicker layer of mill scale, won't cut as cleanly and is a nightmare to fold as one piece will fold differently to the next which destroys the productivity benefits of CNC machines.

You sail close to the wind. Firstly it was you likening black people to beaten animals, now you're likening a female politician to a pig?
You don't sail close to the wind, you just come straight out with blatant lies.
I have never likened any people to beaten animals, that was your immature and over-active imagination.
I am not likening a female politician to a pig, that is again your puerile imagination, and deceit.
I likened the mask to a Miss Piggy mask (which is a fantasy character). The wearer of the mask and her gender was irrelevant. I would have made exactly the same comment if the politician had been male.

You're obviously suffering from a serious bout of insecurity that you find it necessary to dream up egregious lies.
