Tesla sales crash

Its starting to look much more like TSLA's pipeline, dip has more to do with the Model switch over, than Musk's unpopularity among EV buyers.

Trump's new car tariff will cost the UK about $2.4 billion if it goes ahead. I am assuming it's mostly luxury cars that we export as we don't seem to make much else.

We exported £6.4 Billion in cars to the US last year. I have no idea how many people are will to blow an extra 25% on a particular brand name. The only saving grace is that if it's all non US cars then other non US competitors will be equally challenged.

this is the data I have:

  • More than 779,584 cars were built in the UK in 2024
  • 603,565 cars were shipped worldwide last year - 77.4% of total production
  • 54% of those exports were to the European Union
  • 16.9% of exports were to the US
102,000 cars at say an average of $95,000 a unit. with a 25% tariff. Your numbers suggest the unit price is a bit lower than my estimate and gets to ~$2.1Bn

We don't pay the tariff though, it's paid by the US consumer. Which means there's no 'cost' to us, just lost business and possibly lower margins. That could be far worse than $2.4 Billion or far less. I don't have a clue.

But my numbers aren't that far off yours. £64k is $82k.

Thats a good point.

There is a reasonably easy way to reduce it further.

Lower the price and charge a subscription fee for the luxury options. The fee, would be exempt I believe as technically it would be a subscription. It would also boost the share price as it would have a positive impact on Reoccurring revenue / Cash EBITDA.

It always surprised me how TSLA had the options as one time fees. But in the early days they were cash strapped.

Jaguar Landrover will be hit. Many of the German manus have plants in Mexico these days, suspect he's trying to flush manufacturing out of Mexico back to the US.

People hate subscription models for cars. It has been tried a lot and I don't think it has ever been a success if a one time purchase was an alternative. It isn't helped that they're also always (afaik) a worse deal.

What do you think a lease is?

It depends how long you intend to own the car. Not to mention the goal is to avoid higher taxes in certain regions.
