According to the popular belief, countries that have high cild benefit payments should have high birth rates.
But that isn't the case.
Norway's birth rate is 1.55
UK's birth rate is 1.56
But Norway pays way, way more in child benefits, with a population of just 5,000,000 people.

Modern life, bills and wants figure. Take one country that has risen rapidly S Korea and the birth rate has dropped to alarming levels.
The UK started going to 2 salaries needed to buy a house yonks ago. Just needing part of the 2nd one didn't last long. Rental costs relates to house prices in general.

Not easy to find average age of women giving birth in UK ~1960 but you'd probably find it ws ~23.

Education of women.

And access to contraception and abortion.

Times and cultures change. The sexist and patriarchal society is on the wane.
People no longer see women as just an over-accommodating addition to a family. (The culture of Female Service)
They are more prepared to see women as independent, intelligent, high achievers, with much more to offer society and civilisation.
One repercussion of that is the later average age of women having their first child. Consequently a woman's child bearing lifespan is reduced, and they have their own careers and interests to follow, and their own needs and emotions are considered.

Is there any data to support your assumptions?
Or is it just some urban myth spread by the Red Top media?

Loads of times back in the day on social housing contracts. Another often heard comment during their conversations was "If I have a boy next time they gotta give me another bedroom" (or girl for instance).
