That's another fine mess you've got me into....

The guys previous experience is building sites.
dont tar all site plasterers with the same brush because of this cowboy, what u have here is appalling work most dreadfull and its going to take time and money to put right i doubt this man has done any site work as the standard of his workmanship is really low no site agent or foreman would accept that kind of work i can do better than that with my eyes closed, if you lived a bit closer to me i would try to help out but readings a bit far for me i cant beleive you handed over the money to him its clear fom the pictures the man canot use a trowel

Agree with the sentiment, steve. In my experience the opposite is the case, lads coming on sites now because the extensions etc have dried up have been getting away with murder for years because their clients often know no better. When they come on a site with a clerk , or agent they can't talk their way out of it. They struggle because for years they have been able to charge the rate according to what they can do in a day, but on site they have to cover the mtres at the same rate as everyone else and quite frankly are not able - nobody making them cups of tea, pressure to finish and move on to next unit etc, agents going around shining halogen lights on walls. After a couple of weeks housbashing on site, doing someones bedroom or a couple of ceilings is relaxing!!

Of course, there are excellent tradespeople who won't touch sites because of all the hassle, and they are as good as anyone else. there are also guys on site that should not be let inside your front gate, never mind your front door! So I think on balance, you have to take each person on their merits regardless.

Of course I'd need to see one of your jobs to know what it "should" look like
quote]you shouldent need to see other jobs to know thatf you have had a bad plastering job done

theres 2 types of plasterer, a plasterer and a skimmer; a plasterer can skim a skimmer cant plaster!!!
Thems very true words as well ;)

Disagree totally - that's like having a mechanic who can only change the oil, or a dentist who can only do fillings,
There are plenty of grease monkey’s around passing themselves as mechanics & even a recent case of a dentist who wasn’t, just "doing a bit on the side" at his wife’s practice

those people are not plasterers.
I agree with that & believe that’s what tommyl18 was intimating.

yea thats what i meant its very hard to find good plasterers even harder to find a good plasterer at the right price

So - the bloke from Checkatrade come round today.

He started off rather sheepishly stating that it was not a finished job. That one should be able to paint straight onto a finished job and that this wasn't in a state to allow that. I think were all on that page.

He pointed out what he thought was wrong with it. Which wasn't anymore than I had already noticed. He did say, in his opinion, the walls were closed in quite well and that it was shame that the bloke had rushed the fiddly bits, since otherwise it would have been a good job. I wonder...

In his opinion. All three chimney breasts would need to be reskimmed to avoid "seeing" the repair in the future. In the case of the upstairs one - a straight re-skim to sort out the rounded corner. He seems to think that the correct method is to allow the plaster to off quite a bit so that you can trowel across it?

In the case of the two downstair ones. Hack off the botched inside areas, then float to some stop beads and re-skim the entire breasts for the reason in the paragraph above.

To sort out the two low areas where the plaster does not meet the architrave is a pretty simple job, which I thought it would be. Stick a bit more in and make it flat.

In the front room where he failed to skim down properly over the hardwall and left the wall not straight. He suggested I hack off about an inch below the line of the skirting and he would re-float and skim. Thereafter any irregularities when the skirting was fitted, would need to be resolved by filling.

In the case of the plaster being high around some areas of the door frame, apparently it's house trash time again, and sand them back till they don't protrude anymore. Good job I have a paint spaying mask.

The rest will have to be sorted out by the decorator filling and sanding the internals where they are carp, which is almost everywhere.

He wrote everything down. Said he'd send me a quote over email. He's got 6 weeks work to do before he can fit me in.

Got another bloke coming tomorrow night... This is like buying houses, you have to get your eye in...

It doesn't sound to me like he's offering to do that much. He's trying to pass it all to the decorator. I wouldn't wait 6 weeks for that paltry amount of work to be done. Keep on searching - or better still get the original bloke back for a day (gratis).

The correct method is to do the rounds with a bull nose trowel.
The first plaster should have use one if you didn't want the rounds squared off with bead, they'll take a good eye to get them right now free hand,
probably best to nail up a straight edges and make them up square with bonding, arris the corner off then run them with the bull nose.

check atrade lmao although the idea is sound but im not sure it works it says they keep track of qualifications ,but you can get qualified with no experience nowdays so it makes no sense there, i took the check a trade challenge and after a few clicks of the mouse i was invited to apply im not saying this spread is a numpty like the last one you had but i wouldent be going with him if i were you because of his affiliation with this company http://www.checkatrade.com/Trade/Challenge.aspx try the checkatrade challenge for your self

The only CV in this game is your last job.

Check the work before the paperwork!

The new NVQ is a disgrace as well steve, have you seen the craic with that?.

Can't be bothered to read all this thread.
Have a neighbour with a 3500sq/f newbuild and he couldn't obtain the plasterer he wanted and settled for second best.

A number of guys who were asked to paint the walls had a look at the job and made their excuses and left when they saw it.

The decorator who took the job on (one man band) spent three weeks levelling and sanding. Had an extra three guys on Saturdays also.

try the checkatrade challenge for your self
I did out of interest & all you have to do is keep clicking yes; even my wife would pass the same test  . To be fair, it does say you would be subject to a detailed vetting procedure but weather or not that would be any more valid, who knows!

The only CV in this game is your last job.
Totally my sentiment; I don’t have any qualifications (at least not that are relevant) that could prove I have reached a certain standard but the quality of my work speaks for itself & is all that matters in the renovation work I much prefer to do.

Maybe he's not a 'crack-head' after all.

ive sent all my details on that checkatrade see what happens if they want me to pay a couple of hundred quid to be a member they can kiss my ass i did that with fmb and that was a waste of time
