The Great British Build-off

cognitive dissonance runs deep in Amercian voters, all those Trump voting farmers suddenly thinking "oh sh1t, we need migrants to work on our farms"
I get your point, I think however in his specific case there was no cognitive dissonance, he simply couldn't care what part of the globe his workers come from as long as they hold the required skills.

I do think some folk don't think it through e.g. folk in the UK who want the migrants out but would then complain about their granny being in a poorly staffed care home, or complaining about even longer NHS wait times.

It all depends if you mean those fantastic detached town houses or the terraced piles, riddled with rot and ruin. I was referring to the inter-war houses - "homes for heroes" which were bunged up with little regard for high standards as the demand was urgent. The same applies to the proposals for rushing homes in the next few years. Building them quickly at the cost of quality is a short-term measure that'll need more work done to maintain them in future.

But the government could incentivise a scheme to make the building industry a more attractive career for school leavers, no?
You do live in a picturesque world. There’s terrace houses worth 10’s of millions lol.

Do you mean pre fabs as I call them? Ones with tin roofs etc ?

A load of apprentice builders won’t help. We need money, lots of it, and a dedicated developer to take charge.

I was brought up in a council house, I think they were built in the late 60s. Great houses, three decent sized bedrooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen and hall again all decent sizes. Bathroom not overly big but perfectly fine. Decent front and back garden. We moved out in the early 90s and it's only in recent years the houses (mostly privately owned now) are starting to get reroofed etc.

I've also lived in an ex council house built in the 30s/40s. Solid, brick walls throughout. Slate roof, to my knowledge it still wearing its original slates. Front garden not too big, back garden massive!

As I said earlier, I wonder how the new builds will be looking decades from now?

No, there really isn't.

No, they were built after the Second War.

Investing in the future should begin with a new generation.

So Prefabs then, as I said.

I mentioned houses built during the inter-war years, but if you want to extend the period to homes built after WWII, fair enough - some of those prefabs are still standing, protected with Heritage status, so maybe not quite the kind of Showaddyshodddy structure previously discussed.

No, it should begin with somewhere to live.

Which brings us back to sq. one.

It does, and as I said we need some “money” to start the ball rolling.

On a side note, I used it live on Newport and there’s a fair few prefabs there.

Developers buy direct from manufacturers at heavily discounted prices.

Way cheaper than any council could buy at.

Maybe Elon can offer some advise on this.
If it's getting difficult for the Builders Merchants to get materials with their buying power then it must be affecting the BIG building companies let alone the small ones.

Well some thing has to be done

The UK needs 1.5 million homes in order to house the migrants

Other infrastructure will also need building in order to deal with the migration

Hospitals
Schools
Mosques
Hotels
Etc
It's not just migrants is it though.

Lets look at this realistically - if TPTB said rather than we have an ongoing housing shortage but the UK (& the planet) has an over population crisis!

I know it's not popular with TPTB and religious leaders but something has to be done - the fecundity man will cripple the planet and affect our dependants in the future.

Me, wife and I are childless not by choice. I'm not jealous of people who do have a family but I am concerned for the future. I suggest it is time the UK stopped paying child allowance for the more than the second birth (and Taxed big families - esp. Rice-Pud & BoJo for their tribes)!

Totally different buying power imho.

There’s a new build plumber in the CC, his firm does 100’s of houses a year. I’ll ask him

Statements like that don't fit with the Reform-esque narrative ;)

They and their like would have us believe the UK would be Utopia if all the migrants were turfed out. No housing shortage, no lengthy NHS wait times, no poor social and mental health services, no lack of school spaces, no crime. My goodness it would be paradise ...
