I'm 54.
I have lived a 'law abiding' life
That doesn't mean I haven't gone over the speed limit occassionaly or thrown a bit of litter down.
I'm human, I will transgress sometimes.
However, if I am in the wrong and get caught then I will admit and accept the consequences of my actions.
I treat people, all people, with respect because I would like them to treat me the same way, and usually it works.
If I were to go out and start beating the crap out of someone or spitting in their face because of the job they were doing then I would expect to receive similar treatment.
The officers I know are all long serving members and a few even have their children following in their footsteps. A case in point is my brothers ex wife. She has been a policewoman for over 20 years and her son and daughter have been officers for a number of years. Because of this, and because I knew a few from when my children were toddlers, I have met a wide variety of them. Not one of them has ever had a reprimand/investigation because of their behaviour, in fact a number of them have awards for bravery or heroism.
Yes, there are bad ones in the force, but then I know some bad engineers/plumbers/mechanics etc.
They are not all the same.
whilst i agree with the wider sentiment of your post I do object to being innocent of ANY crime and then handcuffed/sworn at/mocked and abused by ar$eholes who know that if my complaint gets to court they can hide behind the fact that most jurors do not want to believe that many of the front line police have an over inflated opinion of their own worth and act like bullies.
If inspector kancker accuses me of a crime and i protest my innocence then he takes my denial as proof of guilt. How thick is that?
I try to treat people in manner that i would like to be treated, unfortunately too many policemen/women don't subscribe to that philosophy
The police do have a tough job to do but they often make their own lives more difficult by treating the public with contempt.
The police might deserve respect but then so do the public.

Incientally I know a woman who was a police officer, her son is one as well. She started writing her phd and (a couple of) her colleagues took umbrage at the tone of it and assaulted her. they didn't like the fact that she exposed drink driving, theft of drugs and her assertion that the police often aggravate situations.
