Regardless of the crime, regardless of the criminals nationality, the direction of travel for sentencing seems to be less (in terms of duration) as opposed to more, the only exceptions being the most heinous of crimes and even then they seem very reluctant to give whole life tariffs.
All we increasingly get these days is waffle from the cuddly wuddly do-gooders about longer sentences not resulting in a decrease in offending rates. So fecking what?!? If someone commits a more serious crime, bang them up for longer, in most cases much longer.
I keep on saying it, the government p1sses enough of our hard earned up against the proverbial wall with little to show for it. So why not direct some of the £££ to building more, properly staffed, prisons.
Oh but the poor criminal, we need to understand why they did it, we need to cuddle them, nurture them, love them to ensure they move away from their criminal ways.
Emmm, but what about justice for the victims of the crimes?
