This is a massive problem for us Brits, it is noted,,we are generally rubbish at speaking foreign languages, this is true. We have little chance to be fair though.
I've made the effort in the past, only to be dismissed with "just speak English" bit humiliating.
English is the new "Lingua Franca" it is of course arrogant to expect everyone to speak it.
Which foreign language should we choose?
In the UK there is very very little exposure to any foreign tongues.
It's taught badly in the UK.
I remember being in rural (Well ruralish) Sweden once, left on my own for the day, I searched around for something to eat. There was a mcdonalds, I know, hardly adventurous. I queued in line with slight trepidation as I know zero Swedish.
Got to the front of the queue, and sheepishly order a big Mac, fries and coffee I fully expected a very confused look back at me, but instead got, in what I swear was perfect English and I mean perfect "would you like milk in your coffee" very depressing!!
Only time every I've been glad to know a few words, was in Portugal, small local bar, no English spoken, but managed to get us, beer, wine and some chips (in Spanish, closest I could get)
