Alongside the electrical rewire consider the other wired services.
Phones- most use Dect handsets, but you still need hardwire for study, for alarm panel, for boardband.
TV / Sky / Cable TV
Cat 5 can be used- but TV is best (as in simplest, as in no high cost baluns / convertors) run in a good solid foam co-ax. Star wire from a TV amp out to all rooms that might have TV. Consider the location in each room- wall or floor and provide power and co-ax. Also remember that the amp will require the aerial, sky, cable feed in.
Alarms
Best run in cable- yes there are qulity wireless systems, but again wire is best. Most wireless systems are designed around battery dectectors and batteries fail, need replacement etc
Data
Cat 5 / 6 is best, but wireless is good and for standard domestic speed / bandwidth is not an issue. However as TV's become PC's and data streaming increases the demand for bandwidth will become greater.
Main rooms such as TV room, office / study are best wired- a well positioned wireless router in the centre (and no 3ft thick walls) offers service for bedrooms and casual use
Home automation
Products are available to make homes zoned for heating- if you intend to do this then there's a choice of wired v wireless. If a wired system, cabling will be required for sensors / thermostats in each zone.
Mood lighting systems is a diverse field, and if deployed will require various signal and power cables
Sound
Can be simple box switching to allow for sound zones (QED speaker switches 4 zone = £60).
Or can be very sophisicated stored music multiple zone, multi channel. multi user systems. Check out Richer Sounds "multi room" for ideas/
