Hi all
I would love to learn how to do a BBQ
But have never used one before.
Please can some folk give me a recommendation on a good bbq to start. Something simple. Really want that bbq flavour with charcoal for burgers and chicken
Also any links to particular recommendation BBQs would be great too.
I googled beginners UK guide to BBQs but not much comes up.
Any other tips would be great. Thanks all

Here are my tips for easy and consistent BBQ results:

1) use briquettes and a chimney starter. (Use 3 sheets of newspaper and some squirts of dragon gel.

2) Weber style bbq with lid is more controllable for beginners

3) use quality briquettes, the Weber ones will stay hot for 3+ hours

4) BBQ tools: 1 x tongs for food
1 x tongs for coals
1 x flat spatula for turning food

5) buy yourself an instant meat thermometer, thermapen is the best expensive but almost instant temp
I can’t tell you how much difference this will make to BBQing meat

My tips for success:

1) Start with bottom and top vents open 3/4rs
2) have coals spread over just one half of grill, so you can move stuff out of the heat
3) find out how long your meat will take, put it on the hot grill, cover with the lid, then leave until close to half time, then turn. Time to end then check with thermometer probe.

Let’s say you want to do lamb steaks, do above then check temp, aim for 68 to 72.

4) avoid messy marinades, for lamb, beef, chicken just pepper and salt to season.

5) marinades can be messy and don’t always add much flavour, try a dry rub say on chicken

i would not bother with the heatlog
we use those on our wood burner , often on offer at home bargans - lasts a couple of hours on the fire - BUT i would certainly NOT cook with , never even considered - made from recycled WAX and Sawdust
take it back or stick on some sort of burner to site around in evening

I also have various chips, Apple, Whisky - used when first purchased but dont bother , only when smoking now, and add seasoned apple/plum tree i cutdown years ago

you will see a difference between that BigK and the restaurant quality - Much even burn and longer
as mentioned before and repeated again and Temp probe instant is a MUST as far as i'm concerned

looked up the old order , as i ordered 4 bags a few years ago - under £20 a bag

just for the future , as you have everything for now
as i have posted , and linked to , do get some odour less bbq lighters - again i did find a difference , and the lumpwood
I wish I had this advice many many years ago , when i first started BBQ - 1979 , and the results where not great ..... more of a novelty until i met someone who knew what he was doing in 2006 ish on holiday in france = BBQ every night and it was fantastic

yes this is right, for next time get the natural firelighters and order in some decent lumpwood.
the whole thing turned into a bit of an emergency in the end.
he had better come back and tell us how it went

he had better come back and tell us how it went
hopefully it wont put him off, i burnt a lot of the stuff on my first few BBQ , i had my dad (very old fashioned) and he didnt eat a thing , very embarrassing , and i was disappointed , made it worse when he bought me a HOW to BBQ book....

Its one of these it draws air in and quickly heats the charcoal up the stack to get it burning, you then tip it out onto your BBq.
Never used one myself as just carefully build coal up around the fire lighters being mindful not to smother them and then go and have a couple of beers. But I know that some people swear by them
