As long as the switches are suitablly rated for the way you are using them and you install them appropriately I don't see a problem with using such switches. If the switches will be handling mains they should be mounted in an appropriate enclosure and their toggles should be earthed.

You might want to look into some of the remote control systems intended to work with a standard lightswitches. This will both allow you to locate the switches where you want and avoid putting mains through the switches

Well spotted BAS I have used the Lidi remote units but they do seem to switch on and off incorrectly switching one of 4 off switches another of the 4 on and I have found my DVD/Hard drive switched off in error so not as good as they first seemed.

All off does work so still do the job wanted but they were cheap so only to be expected.

Use them to switch a low voltage feeding a relay or contactor coil. The contacts on the relay / contactor switching the power to the appliance.

Use a chunky contactor and you wil hear the impressive CLUNK as the switch is operated.

Use a good quality 12 volt supply for the switches and coils but ensure the body of the switch is earthed to ensure in the event of a fault in relay / contactor, power supply, cabling the metal toggles cannot become live. Include an RCD in the mains feed to power supply and relays / contactors.

Or just get up and operate the switch on the wall socket

I have used the ~~~~ remote units but they do seem to switch on and off incorrectly

Can be a pain if one of your near neigbours has some remote control systems sharing the same radio channel ( as most do )

I mean like i have heard of people using them to control their lights and have had the switches by their bedside, how do they do this(wire their lights to wherever they want to switch them on.

And i mean u kno u can get extension leads with switches for every socket, i want to be able to switch them on/off with the military style switches??

I just like these kind of things, im a very technical person

If so you would have been able to work this out yourself.
Errm No cheeky comments, just looking for help.

Technical-Technology, i kno nuffin about electrical wiring and that kind of stuff

??

:?: Err--- all light switches are put where people want them and are wired into the lighting circuit so as to switch the lights people want them to... :?:

To use those switches you'll have the added complication of providing them with an ELV supply which you use to control relays to do the switching of the LV supply to the lights.

Again each socket will need a relay associated with it, plus control wiring, so there's no practical way you could do that with a multi-gang extension lead - you'd have to make your own for a start, and a 6-way, for example, would need to be in an enclosure large enough to also house 6 relays, and it would need a regular flex and 13A plug for power plus a 7-core cable with a 7-pin plug which would go into a 7-pin socket you'd have to somehow fix into the wall, cabled to each switch for the ELV control signals.

From a mechanical viewpoint dado trunking would be much easier - get a deep variety and you might find that the relays and their ELV source would fit inside it. It would look pants though.

You shouldn't have much trouble working it out then.
