Are you reading that second line to mean: set to number of hours from switching on (ie:switch-off varies dependent on switch-on time), rather than set time within number of hours (ie: switch-on varies, switch-off fixed). I could probably live with that - but I still need the device to be twixt fitting and lamp - fussy or what!

Yes.

If you can live with that there are ones which go into the fitting.
