Varifocals

I love my varis, they're fantastic. Took me a few hours to get used and now I don't see any change from near to far. I couldn't be without them.

Definitely go back and query the prescription; mistakes are not uncommon.

The only complaint I have is that when you are doing stuff, you sometimes wish you could rotate the lenses through 180 degrees to see near stuff at the top of your vision. :)

That's true. I often have to take mine off for such close work.

Has anyone considered KERATOPLASTY ?. Look it up on line .

I did - and found it to be a nightmare to adapt .
Commonly called 'monovision. One eye sees long distance vision and the other eye -'near vision' (reading eye).

They say the brain has to adapt to it though and takes time .

Fortunately- I went to a place in Bolton- and the 'eye guy' insisted he popped in a contact lens in one of my eyes to simulate it-and asked me to leave it in and try it for 2 days .
By the time I got home - I decided to take it out and 'bin it'.

Dear god they're a nightmare and a half to try and get used to  Give it two weeks he said and you'll be fine.
I couldn't get on with them, my head was spinning! Unless it wasn't made correctly(?)

Was told roughly only 50% are happy with it

My first pair of varifocals made straight bits of timber look like coat hangers so I changed them for two pairs see'ers and readers ,but I got sick of trying to balance different glasses on the top of my head and also had a lot of work putting 8x4 sheets through a saw bench you cant be in focus both ends very frustrating finally went back to Opticians for a better pair of varifocals and Iv'e never looked back

Half the timber these days is like coat hangers to start with! You sure it was the specs? :)
Joking aside, as you say the best quality ones give the best results. Bit more money, but worth it for something so important. Not perfect even then, but useable.

Now that's just not true. I've just been looking at some wood at B&Q and every piece was perfectly straight.

Mind you, I was wearing my varifocals!

Another vote for them here. Had them for some years now. Took a while to get used to them though. Certainly the first week or so was fairly horrible. Once you get used to them though they are much better. What a great idea. Instant rotating lenses. Push a button on the side and they spin round. Round frames though

I've got an appointment with the optician tomorrow:cool: I'm going to see if I can get one with a local garage to have a grease nipple fitted to the back of my neck.

The John Lennon look!

Seriously, though, if you do go back to your optician I'd be interested to know whether he sorts out the problem.

My advice, get changes made and persist, at least for another two or three weeks. Personally, I think they're worth it.

I've worn bi focals and vari focals and find the vari ones are good, having said that the line on the bi focals helped keeping my head on the horizontal when having to much of the falling down juice. ;)

Make sure they fit a dust cap, and only grease sparingly, or it leaks out lower down!

I need them too but can’t afford it.

You’ll laff at me now but what I do is put some ordinary 1.5d reading glasses over my prescription specs. (I’m two specs Tone :D ). It looks stupid but it works and at £3 for an off-the-shelf pair it’s a lot cheaper, if somewhat inconvenient, than the £300 starting price I was quoted for VFs.

Actually I may get thanks here, if not the offer of a BJ, for some very useful info... :p

I was with a patient last year who uses and recommends a company whereby you send the prescription note from your optician complete with an old pair of frames to a place called Ciliary Blue. Do check them out.

You won’t believe the prices and they are good quality! The big guys like Spec$aver$ and Visionexpre$$ etc. don’t like them and refuse to work with them. (Surprise surpise).
