VCDS software advice please

Yep, I can see the filter front left, and I’d do the job exactly the same way as I’ve described.
It looks like one canister complete, and no dismantling necessary?
There won’t be anything worth seeing on the HP pump, I’d leave that well alone.

Yes, a canister filter (Hengst H417WK). A German brand but made in China!

So you'd be confident in filling the filter brim full then starting the engine?

Yes, I would. My logic is:
All diesel pumps are lubricated and cooled by the diesel oil they pump. Obviously, filtering and water removal is critical, and always was.
If the fuel system is dry, obviously running any pump whilst trying to start would be damaging. However, if the engine starts up straight away, there is no interval when the pump isn’t being lubed so no problem!
My thoughts, no one else's and I’d be very happy to hear another point of view.

Got the engine bay photos at last. If the filter is filled before fitting, can the engine then be started?

Yep, brim the filter so theres no air in, connect up and go for it......
Have you any choice at this point, or havent you done the job yet?

Have fitted the fuel filter today at long last. Simply filled it, fitted it, turned the ignition on/off ten times to be on the safe side of bleeding, then started the engine.

The car is fortunate to have a two pump fuel system. Had it been the three pump (tank, high pressure electric and engine driven ) version, VCDS would be needed.

That's it for another 20k miles (VW diesel filter intervals).
