I was meaning to ask when I first saw that 'explanation', although you have resolved the problem, what about the reason why the neutral got damaged (I think you said 'burnt') in the first place - are you just blaming 'loose connections', or what?
I think so, there are 4 pairs of terminals and he was going to use the spare but he said they were very fiddly and I can easily imagine 2 wires trapped under a washer and then nut may not have been particularly stable unless thoroughly twisted together. But then 2x 2.5mm² wires twisted is not a 'nice shape' to wrap around what sounds like a 2BA or possibly 0BA thread.
