OK, thanks, that doesn't look too hard to do. Except that I can't find any replacement brushes - here's the Zanussi page https://shop.zanussi.co.uk/search?q=:relevance:pnc:91463454100&page=4&pagesize=20. The product code is 9146343454100. I looked on espares as well - nothing.

I can use the dryer instead, but I was happy just with the spin function because I think the dryer is liable to wear clothes down over time, and it uses up a lot of electricity.

I would think that because Zanussi used 2 different types of motor Sole & CSET then the spares sites will not know which type you have. If you contact them with the PNC number they may know but probably better to take the old ones out & check they are indeed worn down or broken first, then physically compare them with the ones the sites have illustrated.

OK, it seems that the spinning function isn't working. I just timed it and it lasted two and a half minutes, which was a lot less than I would have expected, but apparently is normal https://homex.com/ask/how-long-is-spin-cycle-on-washing-machine. But I believe that the setting on the central dial is the speed in rotations per minute. I have it set for 850, and, what it actually does seems to be more like 100rpm when I watch it. The clothes are dripping wet after this. So it looks like that is the problem.

By all means check the brushes, but this is a classic timer / programmer fault on that era of Zanussi made machines. It does the initial slow spin but then goes straight to off. Used to get exchange units from EMW but I think they have ceased trading.

Thanks. I got as far as removing the top. Is the motor underneath the pulleys at top right? If so, I think it will be quite a job to get to it. Probably not worth checking the brushes if (a) it's going to be really hard to get to them, (b) if they have gone then I don't think I can get replacements and (c) you think it is a timer/programmer fault anyway. EMW has indeed ceased trading.

I'll get a new machine.

OK, I've got a new washing machine. Quite a job to install it - unpack it, take the transit bolts out, turn off the water and the electricity, shuffle the old one out and the new one in and rewire the plug (it's an integrated one, not one that I can just plug in).

Now I have the problem of getting rid of the old machine. The council no longer runs a collection service. Any suggestions? Looks like I might be in for a bill of £50-60 to get someone to take it away privately.

Which, so far as I can ascertain, is less than the price anyone places on collecting them.

Do you have an angle grinder & a couple of "metal" discs. Washers cut up into smaller manageable pieces very easily which can then be taken to your local recycling centre in a car boot.
