Today I bought 100 Nespresso coffee capsules and a new chain for my bike.

Why the new chain, Mottie?
The reason I ask, if it was for reasons of wear , it is good practice to also change the chainrings and sprockets too (as the whole drive train tends to wear to match itself).
Therefore, your new chain won't match your worn cogs.
However, you'll know far more about mechanical stuff than I, and will be able to judge this for yourself.
And you'll have an excuse to do some more fiddling

Well, although I’ve had the bike about 5 or 6 years and being generally lazy, it’s practically still new and has hardly been used. The onboard computer tells me I haven’t quite reached 5 hours total riding time and I’d agree with that! I took it out for a rare fair-weather ride the other day and was just getting to the top of of a short, steep hill in too high a gear. I was determined not to stop so I got out of the saddle, stood up and really pushed on the pedals .........and the chain snapped!

A new spoke key (push bike) - I'm going to have a go at building a wheel, whether I will ever have the confidence to go above 5mph on it will be another thing - LOL

Indeed, if you let your chain get more than 1% wear then a new chain will probably slip. But change the chain at 0.75% and you can use many chains on the same cassette.

Another trick you can do if you have fitted a new chain and it is only slipping in one or two cogs. Take the cassette apart and reverse the slipping cogs*, and they may no longer slip. (I have two cogs
reversed at the mo and they have both stopped slipping)

*you need to file one of the small lugs on the cog to get it to fit on back to front!

When that happened to me, I went flying, grazes and a dislocated toe....

The only injuries I suffered were grazes to the inside of my right ankle and left inner calf.
