Where did the British car industry go wrong?

All of this talk of shoity British cars reminded me of my second-born's (currently, not happening) Saturday morning football matches.

Every few weeks (at home matches), the field adj. the pitches has a collection of Rover cars brought there, for a bit of mutual showing-off among the proud owners.

One can only imagine the conversations; probably around the frequency of gasket replacements, roadside recoveries, best deal on Homestart, etc etc :ROFLMAO:

I got a Marina up to 120 MPH once, then again I had just pushed it off Beachy head.
Had a Marina with tuned twin carb, and on a road trip in France it kept pace (almost) with an R5 Gordini (non turbo).

A piece of crap really, but I couldn't afford much at the time.

Ended up owning an R5 Turbo 2 for a while though! :)

Out of interest Saab used 1/2 a Triumph V8 engine bought under license. ;) Slant 4.
I remember that engine, SAAB put in in with the front of the engine at the bulkhead. But it wasn't half of a V8, it was its own design, a slant 4. OHC engines were tall and put in at 45° otherwise you wouldn't be able to see over the bonnet.

I had a Marina with a vinyl roof which I used for work, good boot for tools, cable etc, the roof ripped off during high winds and flopped over the windscreen

About here.

I can assure you it was.

Would that be the TR7 engine?, that always looked like half a Stag engine.

People didn't believe in changing cam drive chains on Stags so they could have a bit of a problem eventually especially with the usual totally unknown real mileage. That was real problem on all used cars. I did run one for a couple of years and kept it when I moved on but wife persuaded me to sell it after we married.

TR7 pass but very probably based on 1/2 of it. I was a bit annoyed by Triumph when I found I couldn't fit my 6ft2 frame in a TR6. Always really wanted a TR4A same problem. Odd that I could fit in an Elan and a Europa but Chapman was 6ft and always finally passed them off by driving them. No problem with a Sunbeam Alpine. Driven past Rome and back twice and once nearly to Greece and back. Had to adjust the ignition timing to run on unleaded and remove the thermostat due to the hotter climate,

I found Tito's communist Yugoslavia interesting having seen on the Telly how communists were supposed to live.

Vaguely remember the same engine went in the Dolamite. My dad had the cheap version, can't recall what it was called. Nice comfortable car.
