I have no problems with anyone fitting anything if they are happy and confident about the product. Each to their own, but I will only recommend what I personaly know and trust, as no doubt would anyone on here.

I would love to have a british manufacturer make a boiler I could trust and recommend, but look what we have, leaving my opinions of Baxi to one side, Ideal  , Ravenheat  , Halstead (probably the better of the lot, but with plenty of odd quirks and expensive parts)

Why would anyone want to fit an Ideal when their flamboyant MD has a Vaillant in his home  :?:

maybe we have got off the suject a little here. firstly i dont mind if you pay vat or not. i pay cash anyway as i know its what you tradesmen like ;) so i would expect some type of discount. if its a vat discount then thats down to the individual i dont need to know that info. Yes the boss (missus) wants the old fire out and basicaly a blank canvas so we can decide if we do or dont want to put a fire there. personaly i dont want one but she who must be obayed will decide. and i dont care who you are we are all in the same boat unless your single that is. anyway i now know not to get one off ebay and from what your saying the price ive been quoted is cheap. ??? or am i wrong ? thanks Alan

That implies you expect the tradesman to break the law. So I wouldn't work for you.

Well I'm in a different pond then. Yours is rank.

no i dont expect them to break the law but i do expect a discount for cash. thats unless paying cash has now become illegal. also on the other note if your missus wanted to change something in the house are you saying that you wouldnt?? i did say that personaly i wouldnt have another fire there but if the missus wanted one she could have it. just like she might not see the need for a 50" tv or wheels for the car but if i wanted them i could have them. so i dont see my pond as being rank i just think you may have missunderstood what i was saying.

Ill give you a £2 discount for cash.....save me the diesel of having to pay it into the bank strightaway.

I would rather pay a large cheque in the bank than a large sum of cash due to having to pay 0.6% in charges for paying in cash.

If you do not want us to break the law in accepting cash then you would be charged exactly the same amount be it cash or cheque.

Unless someone breaks the law and does a 'cash job' with no VAT etc there is do discount for you to have

Very few legitimate installers work for a 'cash job' these days as we have to notify work, and no doubt you would want a receipt and warranty of some sort

Sorry my mistake. Just whenever ive had anything done people have always prefered a cash payment. Whether its taking the car to the garage or having work done on the house. ive just had a wall taken down and a few other bits done. and he knocked me £50 off as i paid in cash. £50 might not sound a lot but its a trip to the zoo for the kids. ok perhaps i should have said id like discount for cash instead of expect?? like the builder he wasnt the cheapest quote or the most expensive but out of the 3 i had round he was the only one to mention building regs the others didnt even bother. i want a good job at a fair price everyone likes to barter are you telling me you lot have never walked into somewhere and asked for discount ?? i have customers asking me what deals i can do what can they have free what if they buy things now and pay cash etc etc etc. the same applies in all walks of life. so goinfg back and changing my statement. i dont expect it, i will ask for it but if i dont get it that doesnt mean to say that particular person wouldnt get the job. and the best thing is, is that i leave them to it the kettle over there with the tea coffee and sugar milks in the fridge see you when its done heres my num if you have any probs. now tell me you dont like that sort of customer. ;)

Sounds like nearly all of my customers. I am fairly choosy over what jobs I take on.

I only work with giving quotes up front. My quote is the price, no discount. That is the purpose of a quote, to give the best possible price at the outset to obtain the work, not to overprice so you can give a false discount or freebie thrown in, as with British Gas etc.

Fair enough Dave thats fine you sound genuine with no bull bells or whistles you dont offer discount but you explain why.

ive had quotes before that basicaly say this is the quote but the price can go up if we have to do something we didnt spot in the first place.

unfortunatly i cant be choosey so i often have customers pearing over my shoulder wanting to know the ins and outs of a cats anus. theres a time and a place for questions and halfway through a job isnt it.

My quotes are the final price unless I find an existing fault in the system that has to be fixed. If I had missed something obvious or miscalculated copper pipe short for instance, by how ever much, then it is my fault for being stupid and I absorb the cost.

On a smaller scale the job I just finished today was only quoted for 8 trv's as they already had 2 existing, but when I done the work I decided that it would look better to replace the original 2 with no extra cost to customer, just makes my finished job look better and more professional. I always expect to gain at least 1 new customer from recommendation from each job.

Yes I am genuine, a spades a spade with me, no bullshit ;)

Can I be the first person to say can AlanSj just had over his miserly £1600 and free teabags and move on?

By the way, Dave

We fitted our 2nd 4 series ecoTEC this week. Fault comes up on PCB display every other time you close the flap..... which appears to be held open by a piece of string.

Who do Vaillant UK think they are kidding? This thing is virtually the same build quality as the Pro open vent that preceded it, with the expensive bits taken out.
