Do you reckon painting a large GRP roof white instead of dark grey will reduce heat in summer, and the expansion noises when the sun comes out?

In theory it should. You have to be careful with your choice of paint- emulsion or masonry paint will just flake off.
Depending how big your roof is and how easy the access is you could try an experiment with tin foil or lining paper before lashing out.

EDIT White or tinfoil should reduce the energy coming into the structure but the only real cure for expansion noise is to install the deck etc properly in the first place

Yeah the roofers installed expansion gaps at the manufacturers recommended spacings, but it seems to not be enough. It only happens when the sun comes out from behind cloud and heats things rapidly. With hindsight, I think more could have been installed.

I keep wondering about putting some sort of shade matting or other surface covering over the top because the pigeons also like pirouetting on it in the morning, and the owls like line dancing through the night. Anything to dampen the sounds would do my sleep good! But I'm afraid of doing anything that might hold water on it longer than necessary.

It's quite a large roof too - 15*5m, so difficult to isolate a single section.

Wash the roof and when its dry, sand it down and give it another wash, this time with acetone.
You can then recoat your roof with a lighter coloured topcoat.
Topcoat is gelcoat with wax and styrene added to give a hard finish.
Don't use ordinary paint to coat your roof as it won't last.
