The SDP was formed in 1981 with that express intention as Labour under Michael Foot, and Conservative under Thatcher veered sharply to left and right of British politics. We all know how that ended.
The past decade has seen people pushed into one corner or the other and anyone left in the center ground has been left to die in no-mans-land. Tony Blair keeps plugging away but his words are wasted on both sides and i can't see Keir Starmer being strong enough to drag Labour back to the center.
Nobody is paying any attention to Liberals.
A new Party? Well, that was tried by Chukka Uwumunuu during the Brexit arguments and they went down in flames faster than the Hindenburg.
This farago must play itself out before any balance is found once again.
