Why all the fuss about Rishi's wife?

Hands up anyone who'd ever choose to pay more tax than the law requires?
Unless you're waving, STFU about her paying her tax the way she does.

We might like it if ALL politicians ran their lives to some Higher Standard. But nobody requires them to do so - and on all sides, many don't.

She is NOT a politician.

Hands up anyone who's ever met anyone who choses to pay more tax than the law requires? Anyone who does is probably a politician who's crowing about a few quid because he's in a marginal seat and needs the votes.

And ya can't whine on about it being the tories' fault when it's been the same forever.

It's interesting how the people opposed to fair taxation search wildly for irrelevant nonsense in the hope that they might make their position look sensible.

Lower, for example.

How much tax have you avoided by paying into your pension scheme?

Are you rich?

none of these have any bearing on the fact that the UK has carefully constructed a tax system that allows rich people, living in the UK, to dodge tax on their wealth, income and inheritances.

and justin, of course.

Who's opposed to fair taxation? Sunaks wife isn't offshoring to a tax haven, simply paying taxes on foreign earnings in that country, whilst paying UK taxes on her UK earnings.
It's a non story, that's why there was no fuss when Private Eye ran this story in March 2021, it's a rerelease timed because Sunak's no longer flavour of the month, deservedly so in light of the NI increase but that's another story, it should be the main story but foreigners are an easier target for the more gullible.

Some people on the internet actually advise strangers on how to pay less tax in the UK. Funny old world, innit? So, okay for strangers as long as they are not too rich. What's your cut-off line at which you think people shouldn't follow the laws of the land John? £30k? £80k? £250k?
BTW I wouldn't go for the "deposit account" option but if you wanted to, you could get a Purchased Life Annuity which will (1) pay out more (2) be more tax efficient (3) not run out if you live longer than anticipated.

If you are a UK resident and a taxpayer, contributions to a (low cost) pension plan are an unbeatable investment, since you receive back the tax on the income you made your contributions out of.

E.g. you pay 22% tax. You contribute £78 out of your pocket and your pension scheme receives £100.
You pay £40% tax. You contribute £60 out of your pocket and your pension scheme receives £100.
You have your own company. Instead of paying you £100 gross (£60 net) and paying £13 Employers NI (total cost £113, net amount in your pocket £60) it contributes £113 to your pension plan, and your pocket is only down £60... a real bargain

Which is utterly irrelevant to the merit of an individual case.

Not just the UK. When I was working in >1 country, I used a specialist tax accountant who knew what to declare where, as well as the normal stuff like when to pay yourself in dividends not salary, and on and on. One year I paid him a lot and he saved me a multiple of that . I learned about him from someone in the same game. He worked between 3 countries, played the systems, and never paid any tax.

Strange that NO government has sought to change the tax laws for, the odd few years, decades, centuries(?) May it be, just possibly, that they understand the system better than certain forum whiners?

It's probably why we have so many nice rich foreigners here, spending all their lovely money, putting up the prices of yachts, grand houses, football clubs...

William Pitt the younger introduced the system in 1799. George Osborne made some reforms in 2015-17 so that non dom status was no longer hereditary.
