I went this morning. Only thing not in stock was gravy bones treats for the dog. European wine - well, they couldn’t get rid of it quick enough and were giving 25% off if you bought 6 bottles or more. No shortage of the stuff and obviously, no shortage of truck drivers to get it over here. Of course, I obliged……

Had Tesco delivery this morning, everything we ordered was there.


Now however there are long queues for the petrol pumps........

It seems to be the new 'in trend' to say something is running low get it printed in the tabloids and increase the markup by a whopping percentage, panic buys ensue, business makes fantastic profits, upper management get nice big bonuses, the cannon fodder makes do with yet more job cuts...

I agree that Brexit has caused some issues related to the retention of labour but these problems were inevitable, hopefully they will only be short term.
If the NHS needs 50,000 nurses then they need to start training more nurses to solve the problem in the long term while importing foreign nurses to alleviate pressure on the NHS in the short term.
I think the pressure on the economy due to labour shortages is more to do with money than Brexit, the Tories have created an economy based on low wage business models, cheap labour from Europe made employers complacent.

I wonder if many European lorry drivers also want to avoid the UK, not because of poor services, but all the paperwork. Not so long ago there were constant reminders on the motorways to ensure you gave extra time for border crossings etc. If you're being paid per job, then you don't want one that leaves you stranded for days while you queue to get through customs.

The nurse issue has been a problem well before brexit. So it's not a brexit problem.

Though there cannot be any doubt brexit has added to these problems.

But as I said earlier it's hard to tell because of the impact covid has had.

not really, the UK economy needs foreign Labour to fuel it.

many jobs (carers, fruit pickers, delivery drivers, meat processors) are not careers British people want to do.

and Brexit is not the solution as it’s real purpose is to increase inequality by deregulation

The nurse shortage was predicted years ago but successive governments decided that importing foreign nurses was cheaper. A friend is a senior nurse who spent maybe 5 years at her trust converting EU nursing staff into NHS systems.

The demographics of the nursing population indicated a shortage as many aged, and retired. Nurse training became an expensive way to train compared to the older system and the financial support was decimated.
You can't cut training and be surprised when you run out of qualified staff, especially when you encourage loads of people to go home

No European lorry driver in their right mind is going to leave The EU to come and get us out of the merd on Plague Island. There's plenty of demand for their services much closer to home where they don't risk being told to go home if the situation improves. Overnight services for drivers in UK are often expensive and squalid, whereas countries like France provide decent facilities for little or no charge. This last fact alone, about sums up this country and why Brits don't want to work in transport. Not sure I would relish driving for 15 hours per day, p1$$1ng in a bottle and having Ginsters for Breakfast.

So why are Germany and Poland exploiting Filipino hgv drivers?, Germany are short of 60,000 drivers, France short of 45,000 drivers, UK short of 60,000 drivers (RHA estimate although more recent estimates say 100,000, probably for dramatic effect)
