Do you have to make a will through a solicitor or is there another way ? say through the bank or summat?
It's something people don't really think about.

Wills dont have to be complicated. The shortest will accepted into probate in the UK was the words "All to wife" scribbled on an envelope and found in the dead mans hand by a copper.
Something like:
"I am of sound mind and body and this is my last will and testament. I mean exactly what i say in this will and no other meanings may be construed from these words.
My estate is to be executed as follows:
1. Sell the house and car and all other liquidatable assets.
2. Pay all funeral expensesand any other legal fees.
3. Divide liquidated estate as 1/2 to wife, 1/4 to eldest son and 1/4 to youngest son.
The will supersedes and replaces all other wills.
Signed and dated by me
Signed and dated two witnesses.
The above would hold up in court easily, unless someone produces a new one.

or unless you have third son after writing the will (the middle one would then get nothing)
or if one or all of the beneficiaries died before you did. Would you have wanted their share to go to their dependents, or to be shared among the remaining beneficiaries) if any?

What if the person arranging the funeral decides to hold it on a chartered yacht in Monte Carlo, and their is no money heft for your widow and sons?

1. That would be up to the third son to contest the will then. i didnt say the will was incontestable, all wills are, no matter how tightly there written, all im saying is it would pass probate as it stands.
2. the law states if a beneficiary dies that share goes to his living descendants. You dont need to write that in.
3. the law states any creditor has a claim on your estate if they can prove the debt.
4. then the beneficiaries take him to court as it doesnt say anywhere thats what he could do, and the first paragraph says so.
5. anyone who presents the will for probate and is a relative or friend can apply to be executor.
like i said, it wasn't a foolproof will, it was an example of a simple will that would pass probate.
On the other hand, if you had spent as much time writing an example of your own rather than trying to pick holes in my contribution then the OP would have two examples to go by. i guess some people only operate on negativity.

You picked holes in it, and it wasnt even intended to be foolproof, i didnt claim it was watertight, i simply attempted to show something that wpuld pass probate.
A bicycle is a passable form of transport, but im sure you wouldn't expect to do 60 MPH and 0-60 in 6 secs on one, would you? Especially when they didnt even claim you could.
