it means a very sad and a very special day to me that still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. It makes me thankful for the sacrifice they made and sad that they had to make it, but still did so without question. There is a church near us that has a cross with jesus on and the the years of the two world wars with the inscription, does it mean so little to all ye who pass by? I have often considered making a plaque to put underneath it.

I think you only had to watch the bbc program on tuesday night to see the reality of it and to be thankful to those old soldiers.

To me it means remembering and giving thanks to all those who bravely gave their lives, so that we can live as we wish today.

But no doubt there will be others who find it "glorifys" war and should be forgotten, but I give thanks that they are in the minority.

I am gob smacked Thermo i am surprised anybody bothered to know what it was all about.

I do know ALL about it but i didnt see the programme the other night, but i do relate to that time and those people to what i see and hear today and it is very very depressing.

We owe them so much and definetly not worthy because of what we did with their sacrifice

I really agree with you freddie we are not worthy of their sacrifice! and be sure if the time came I would'nt fight for this country when you see what this country does to war veterans. Imagine the dismay of someone who lived in mud and bullets and the pure hell of any vetrerans from all conflicts to see some pinstripe on the news explaining that poppy day is a charity and can only be allowed to collect for 2 days of the year (Salisbury/Southampton to name just 2 ) as it wouldn't be fair on other charities. Like dog charities ffs!!!. Makes me curl up in embarrasment.

Very true mate all of this stuff is totally sickening and some people try to turn the whole thing into a war or political statement instead of fully recognising what it,s all about.

I actually think it's total ignorance as they dont actually know what it all means.

After seeing things today, there is no way i would risk my life for my birth country or let any of mine do the same, infact i wish i could dig my relatives up and move them before somebody has them arrested for making a sacrifice that could upset an ethnic or other race.

Freddie, don't post late at night on this thread, or there's a risk the thread could degenerate.;) There are plenty of other threads for that. I'm sure you wouldn't want it to go that way. 11-11-11 is for families to remember their losses in war.

Rememberence day is for families to remember their lost relatives Oilman but 11-11-11 is something else and what started Rememberence day, do you know what 11-11-11 is all about?

without detracting from the sentiments made above, this numbering of events such as 9/11 etc instead of naming them is making me cringe it's almost as bad now as the quotation marks signal that was so popular some time back another one that made me cringe.

Kendor i am mystified could you explain better.

If what i think you refer too that 11-11-11 is some kind of modern day reference similar to 9-11 and 7-7 you couldnt be more wrong, could you please clear that part up please.

My aim is purely to see who knows EXACTLY what it refers to and what it is all about.

11th hour, 11th day etc etc when guns stopped firing. 6 months before the treaty of versailles. 3 years after john mccrae or someone wrote his poem about poppies (which, incidentally, encouraged the continuation of war) and which was the inspiration for some american woman in the 1920's to use poppy flowers symbollically.

Well Freddie, when we came here 5 years ago we didn't know what 11-11 was about.
Reason: in our home country remembrance day of the fallen is on May the 4th and the day after we celebrate the end of WWII.
Why don't we have Remembrance day in November like most of the rest of Europe: simple, The netherlands staid 'neutral' during the first WW (although we took care of a lot of Belgium and France refugees).

11-11 in The Netherlands is an old patron day: St Martin who helped the poor and needy.

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

In a few minutes time just give a thought for those poor souls because without them none of us would have excisted today
