For russia to remove the threat it faces, it is necessary for it to use ukraine as a stepping stone - not necessarily physically, but politically. Ukraine could stay neutral and not interfere with the transit or it could attempt to prevent the transit by joining a fight that it wasn't a part of. It has made its choice and will reap the consequences. It cannot be ruled out both of them are doing a good cop, bad cop show. It should be apparent that neither russia nor ukraine is doing your wallet a favour - neither are your friends.
